The New York Giants

Alright, the G men! A team that needs answers like they need oxygen. Even with a playoff win last year I just can’t imagine that, that was exciting for the Giants in the sense that they are only a piece or two away. They need to fill a lot of holes so let’s dive into what they did for the first four picks of their draft and talk about the future outlook of the Giants.

I felt very similar about this pick as I did with the Chargers, the 6th pick being Malik Nabers (WR). The reason I compare the two is that I felt the need they chose was not the top one but the pick is still a home run and makes a little more sense for the Giants considering the top 3 guys were gone and Penix was not rated to go at #8 by really anyone but the Falcons. Getting Nabers give the Giants a WR1 since OBJ and a receiver they have been searching for, for a long time. After 1500+ yards and 14 touchdowns Nabers is ready to put corners on notice and be Daniel Jones’ best friend for the future as of now.

Getting what I believe to be the best safety in the draft doesn’t hurt with Tyler Nubin (S) at 47. Nubin grossed over 1900 defensive snaps in the last three years allowing him to see all different types of offensive schemes and now letting him be an asset to the Giants after losing McKinney to free-agency. Nubin will have to work hard but I see him starting in the deep safety spot come week 1.

Pick 70 came as a depth piece but to put pressure on the rest of the secondary room with Andru Phillips (CB). Phillips had a much better campaign in 2022 than this past year but that shows that he has the potential to be good. Andru has played outside corner plenty and gotten in over 300 snaps in the slot over the last three years. Three touchdowns on 400+ coverage snaps I do not hate at all but the 38 receptions allowed on 57 targets is where they lose me. Andru will need some work but that is what the next level is all about for most these guys.

The 104th pick Theo Johnson (TE) is a direct correlation with the chance of Darren Waller calling it a career. While it is still up in the air I believe it’s still good to go grab a big TE to help the team. Johnson hauled in 7 touchdowns this past year but only racked up 800 yards over his career at Penn-State so Theo might be a guy that spends his time blocking for now and getting some work in the play-action.

I think the Giants still lack a QB, I cannot imagine Nabers turning Daniel Jones into an all-pro but I think he of course helps. Going into next off-season the Giants need to be ready to either trade up and give a haul or might be up high enough to grab a top QB prospect. All in all I think the Giants had a good draft and I would give them a B for their 2024 class with the first two picks really having a big impact on the grade. I do not see playoffs in the Giants future for 2024 but the defense is going to be much better and if Daniel Jones can play clean football I think just under a winning season at 8-9 is most realistic but 6-11 is a possibility too if Daniels Jones plays a similar way.
