The Houston Texans

The best team in Texas now? The Houston Texans seem to have found their guy in CJ Stroud and in Will Anderson and in DeMeco Ryans. The division and league is only going to get tougher but it seems that the Texans are ready to take on that charge and even lead the way? Let’s look at their first four picks in the 2024 Draft and see where the future may take the Texans.

Their first pick in the draft starting at 42 and grabbing Kamari Lassiter (CB). Lassiter was apart of an amazing Georgia Bulldogs defense and brings tons of youth but experience to an already young Texans team. Kamari didn’t allow a touchdown in coverage all of the 2023/24 season while clocking in over 400 coverage snaps. Kamari is going to definitely be a rotational piece for now but I can see him coming in to start within 2 years.

Pick number 59, Blake Fisher (OT) is a solid one for the Texans. Fisher was on the opposite side of top pick Joe Alt and was rightfully a second fiddle. Fisher got some very solid experience over the last two years but allowed players to get to his QB 8 times over that span. Luckily Fisher will not be starting right away and will learn from one of the best in Laremy Tunsil and provides a cheap option in case of injuries.

At number 78 Calen Bullock (DB) out of USC is selected and probably selected for his cost effectiveness with the safety market but to be the ball hawk he was in college. This pick allows Pitre to be more of a guy towards the box or roam with Bullock having plenty of reps closer to the line of scrimmage. I can see Bullock being a starter by week 5-6 and showing off his ball hawking ability fast.

With pick number 123 Cade Stover (TE) reuniting with his guy Stroud, it is a sign that Brevin Jordan is seen as gone come 2025. Stover is going to be a short route guy and a 12 personnel type of guy. With Shultz locked up Cade with see his share of looks but with be a piece more used in the run game and play action.

The Texans had a very great off-season so the pieces needing to be filled was low but still very much there. I think the 2nd and 3rd picks could have gone somewhere else and the late rounds do not move me either. I would give this Texans draft a C+ as it stands right now. A lower grade on the draft does not mean much for the Texans in this case because they are hemmed in at all positions giving them super bowl looks but I think a realistic expectation is an AFC Championship game.
